Lunar New Year is upon us and you’ve probably noticed that there are rats everywhere. Don’t threat, it’s nothing to worry about. A plague isn’t going to be breaking out in Taiwan anytime soon, just a whole load of Spring Festival celebrations. That’s right: it’s the Year of the Rat and if you were born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 or 2008, it’s all about you this year. Don’t know what that means? Here’s a quick guide to all things Rat to help make sure you get your chunk of the cheese in 2020.
Personality Traits and Characteristics
If you’re a Rat, you’re resourceful, smart and quick-witted, but you lack courage. You are sharp and have a vivid imagination and are thought to be prosperous and wealthy due to your diligence and thriftiness. You have bad PR due to your penchant for hanging around sewers and restaurant kitchens and that time you helped contribute to the deaths of millions of people in Europe between 1347 and 1351. That film about you wanting to become a chef in France still has 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, though, so there’s that…
Lucky Numbers
Two and three are lucky numbers for Rats, which means at some point this year in Taipei you should grab a drink at 23 Public or catch a comedy show at Brian Tseng’s new club, Two Three Comedy. Five and nine, on the other hand, are said to be unlucky, despite the fifth and ninth lunar months (as well as the second) being seen as lucky. Make of that what you will…(Read More: Brian Tseng Has Opened Taipei’s First-ever Fulltime Bilingual Comedy Club)
Lucky Colors
Green, blue and gold are the colors Rats should look out for this year, so you may find fortune on certain Taipei Metro lines. Luckily, Taiwan is also known for its green forests and the blue seas and golden sands of the coastline. So, a perfect excuse to get out and about and explore what the island has to offer. Apparently, yellow and brown are unlucky. So, erm, no going to the toilet in the Year of the Rat, we guess?
Lucky Directions
West, northwest and southwest are where you should be heading this year; does that mean Kanye and his family will be visiting Taiwan this year? He did live in China when he was a kid, after all… It looks like visits to Hsinchu, Kaohsiung and Penghu are on the cards this year, while maybe avoid Taitung since south and southeast are supposedly unlucky… Naa, still go. Taitung is awesome. (Read more: Six Spots in Taitung Worth Visiting)
Romance and Love
Rats are compatible with Rabbits, Dragons, and Ox (just like nature intended…), while they should definitely avoid Roosters and Horses (actually as nature intended). And, when it comes to Goats, tread carefully, as they’ll either make a perfect match or a great enemy. Nobody wants a Goat for an enemy, right?
Famous Rats
Prince Charles, Diego Maradona, Rosa Parks, Eminem, Richard Nixon, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pope Francis, Mark Zuckerberg, Heinrich Himmler, LeBron James, Scarlett Johansson, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Cameron Diaz, Prince Harry and A-Mei, the Taiwanese singer who is often referred to as the “Queen of Mandopop”.
