Taiwan has gone 45 days without a locally transmitted cases of coronavirus (COVID-19). It’s also been six days since a case was imported. Out of Taiwan’s 441 confirmed cases since January, 419 have recovered and there have been seven deaths. 350 of Taiwan’s cases were imported (came from people arriving from overseas), while 36 came from a naval vessel that docked here last month.
With the spread of local cases seemingly controlled, Taiwan is set to relax a few of its precautionary measures. From June 7, social distancing regulations in cinemas and restaurants will be relaxed, according to to Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), head of the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC). Also, from June 1, Taiwan will modify its rules on sending large numbers of surgical masks overseas, reports The Taiwan Times. Previously, only Taiwanese nationals were allowed to send a small number of masks to other Taiwanese nationals abroad.
Taiwan is also potentially planning to reopen to foreign tourists between October and December. “The Taiwan Tourism Bureau will coordinate with the CECC and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on evaluating and stabilizing the epidemic situation. These agencies will work together to achieve recovery and secure growth opportunities for international tourism in Taiwan,” according to Taiwan News.
