Held across Taiwan’s East Coast Scenic area, with the main site at Taitung County’s Torik Visitor Center (都歷遊客中心), the 2019 Taiwan East Coast Land Art Festival is a celebration of local indigenous art, music, culture, identity and more. “The festival emphasizes onsite creation and local participation, focusing on the dialogue among art, nature and culture to adapt to the climate and ecological context of the East Coast.” (Read also: 72 Hours in Taitung County: Culture, Sightseeing & Touring in the Taitung City & Zhiben Hot Spring Region)
The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Song of Tidal Waves,’ which reflects the festival’s geographical location, as well as daily life’s need to adapt to the east coast’s seasonal patterns. The theme is brought to life by ‘Songs of Waves’ at the Moonlight Sea Concert that sees musicians performing over the beautiful backdrop of the sparkling, moonlit ocean. This year’s acts include Sangpuy (桑布伊), The Village Armed Youth Band (農村武裝青年), Chi Shu-ling (紀淑玲) and more. Read aslo: Six Spots in Taitung Worth Visiting)
There will be several open art studios and exhibitions across the festival allowing guests to browse and enjoy art across various mediums, with works on display from artists such as Futuru Tsai (蔡政良) and local Amis woodcarver Siki Sufin (希巨.蘇飛). Open studio experiences available include Dolan Soap, where guests can learn how to make their own handmade soap, and an exhibition from GMA-winning indigenous singer Balai.
The concert and art displays at Torik Vistor Center will also see a variety of local food and drinks on offer, including meats, salads, rice dishes, vegan options, coffee, beer and more. The event is also looking out for the environment by not using any plates, instead serving all food on leaves in an effort to be more sustainable.
