Michelin Stars for 30 Taiwan Restaurants, including Three Stars for Taipei’s Le Palais

Michelin’s gourmet food guide for 2020 has awarded Michelin Stars to 26 restaurants in Taipei and four in Taichung, with Taichung being covered by the city for the very first time. One Taipei venue, Cantonese restaurant Le Palais, received an incredible three-star rating for a third year in a row.

To earn a three-star rating, a restaurant must offer “exceptional cuisine worth a journey,” according to Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin Guides’ international director. Le Palais is located at the Palais de Chine Hotel and is widely recognized as one of the premier restaurants across Taiwan and greater China.

There were six two-star restaurants in total (five in Taipei and one in Taichung), while chef/owner of Taichung’s Oretachi No Nikuya, Sam Chung (鍾佳憲), received the Michelin Young Chef award “for his passion for ingredients, skillful techniques, and personal interaction with diners, making the dining experience all the more convivial and enjoyable, ” reported Focus Taiwan.

These Michelin Star announcements came after Michelin’s Bib Gourmand selections (focusing on affordable, quality food, and a high-standard three-course meal for less than NT$1,000) were revealed earlier this month, with 31 restaurants and 23 street food stalls in Taipei included, along with 21 venues from Taichung. 226 restaurants have been selected by the Michelin Guide Taipei & Taichung, with 30 receiving stars and 75 making the Bib Gourmand list. The Michelin star restaurants were chosen based on multiple visits, both pre- and post-COVID-19 outbreak.
